The merchandise trade deficit of Bangladesh with the rest of the world increased by 46.62 percen the past fiscal year (FY), leaving a deficit in the current account balance of Bangladesh. Banglades Bank recently released such updates of the country's Balance of Payments. It showed that the thi deficit hit $9.47 billion in FY17, a climb from $6.46 billion in FY16. Slower growth in expe carnings, around 1.73 percent, alongside greater growth of 9.0 percent in import payments increase the trade imbalance. The central bank statistics further showed that deficit in services trade s increased, amounting to $3.28 billion, as compared to $2.70 billion in FY16. As such, the annul Balance of Payments showed that its current account balance turned into negative after four year is FY17. Such current account deficit amounted to $1.48 billion which had a record surplus of $4.25 billion in FY16. The last time Bangladesh experienced current-account deficit was in FY12 and t was of an amount of $447 million. Negative current account generally means that the country s spending more on the external front than its earning from the external economic activities.
